Nigerians will overpower any call to divide this nation – US envoy.

The United States ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington, says determined people and leaders in Nigeria would ensure that the country remains united - Symington states that Nigeria’s diversity is an inspiration to many countries - The US envoy points to Nigeria’s plurality as a source of strength The United States ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington, has said those calling for secession in Nigeria will be overcome by Nigerians who support the unity of the country.
Symington, speaking at an event held in commemoration of the 241st anniversary of American independence in Abuja on Thursday, June 29, drew similarities between Nigeria and America, the Punch reports. The ambassador said the first American president, George Washington, had warned that those who seek to weaken a country would always seek to start by causing disunity. He said just like America, determined people and leaders in Nigeria would ensure that the country remains united. Symington said: “Every time we have been challenged, we overcame danger because we had visionary leaders committed to union and citizens committed to ensuring justice for all. “Today, Nigeria is fortunate to have such leaders and citizens. Together, they are dedicated to keeping Nigeria united and just and to ensuring every Nigerian is heard and taken into account and treated fairly.
Together, those Nigerians will overpower any call to divide this nation. “Thanks to them, thanks to you, the lamp of unity and justice burns brightly both in our nations tonight. And the sight of a united Nigeria’s light lifts Africa and with it, the world.” The US envoy said Nigeria’s diversity is an inspiration to many countries, noting that Nigeria’s plurality was a source of strength. Meanwhile, the Urhobo Peoples Integrity Group (UPIO) has distanced Urhobo people from being part of Biafra map, describing it as an insult. The group in a statement through its president, Olorogun Ebenezer Okorodudu, said Igbos had the right to pursue self-determination, but noted that such right does not give them the justification to compel other groups to join the Biafra agitation without consultation. The UPIO said the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) is the socio - cultural organization that takes decision for the Urhobo people after exhaustive consultation with traditional rulers and the people.

10 BIGGEST TRANSFER STORIES LIKELY TO HIT THE HEADLINES THIS SUMMER

Ahead of the opening of the summer transfer window, the football fraternity is anticipating major moves of valuable players between major football clubs across the globe. This is normally important news for millions of football fans as well as sports betting entrepreneurs running any major Portal for Online Betting since the nature of transfers affects the betting industry too. We take a cursory look at ten of the biggest transfer stories, from the Premier League, Serie A, La Liga and beyond, which are likely to dominate the media headlines this summer.
1)Liverpool Eyes Ox
Besides their move for Mohamed Salah, Liverpool is said to be eying Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The move is believed to cost anything around £30 million in spite of the fact that the England midfielder has 12 months to go on his contract at the Emirates. Chelsea is also rumoured to be interested in Oxlade-Chamberlain but the Arsenal star would add more pace and depth to the Reds as they make their return to the Champions Leagues.
2) Mou Roots for a Record-breaking Kane Bid
This is poised to be the biggest in this
summer’s headline transfer stories since the special one has asked Manchester United to go on a spending rampage and splash a whopping £100 million for the maverick Spurs striker Harry Kane and forget about Cristiano Ronaldo. The record bid is likely to bring a change of heart to Tottenham, who have been unwilling to entertain any offers for their lead man.
3)Arsene Wenger Eyes Martial
Apparently, Wenger has Manchester United forward Anthony Martial in his crosshairs, if he misses securing Monaco’s Kylian Mbappe. There is a big likelihood that Arsenal may miss out on their number one target to the Spanish giants Real Madrid, hence the consideration of Martial and Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette as alternatives.
4)Ronaldo Not Top Priority To Manchester United
Real Madrid’s Christiano Ronaldo is not at the top of Jose Mourinho’s wish list this summer. The Red Devils boss spelt out his top priorities to Ed Woodward before the season’s conclusion and Ronaldo has not featured anywhere even though Real has opened a door for his summer move from the club.
5)West Ham Salivates for Walcott
West Ham are in the process of launching a £25 million bid for sensational Gunners’ striker Theo Walcott. The Arsenal forward and English international missed out in Gareth Southgate’s side towards the end of last season. The Hammers are now set to grant him regular play time.
6)Liverpool Have to Part With £70m to get Van Dijk
The Reds are not ready to let go of their bid for Virgil van Dijk even after being told by Southampton that the Dutchman will only go at a whopping £70 million. Liverpool initially claimed to have put on hold their interest in the Southampton centre-half after they were accused of applying an illegal approach. However, Jurgen Klopp seems keen on sealing the deal.
7)Madrid Not Ready for Ibrahimovic
Real Madrid has declined any possibility of taking in Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a temporary contract. The Swedish superstar has been released from Old Trafford and is likely to move to Major League Soccer, though his hopes are that he remains in Europe and his first wish was that the La Liga champions would strike a deal to take him in.
8)Chelsea’s Azpilicueta in Exchange for Alex Sandro Deal
The Blues are ready to offer Cesar Azpilicueta to Juventus partly in exchange for Alex Sandro if at all the cash offer proves to be insufficient. Chelsea are prepared to sign a €70 million contract for the Brazilian full-back, though Juve can only grant a move if the player is ready for it.
9)Varane Willing To Stay With Real
Apparently, Rapahel Varane has been convinced to remain in Real Madrid in the face of increasing overtures from Manchester United. The France international has been assured of regular play by Skipper Zinedine Zidane.
10)Barkley Still Interested in Moving out
Everton’s Ross Barkley still wants to opt out of the club this summer. The England international, who has been linked with Tottenham and Arsenal, is convinced that a move will secure his place in the Three Lions fold.

Reports: Juventus and Chelsea go head-to-head for Danilo

What’s the story?

It seems as though Brazilian full-back, Danilo, is a man in demand as both Juventus and Chelsea are looking to acquire his signature to strengthen their squad. While Chelsea are looking to increase their strength in depth, Juventus are looking to fill the gap left by Dani Alves’s departure.

According to Marca, the Old Lady haven’t given up on signing the former Porto right-back and are considering a €15 million bid, but will have to pay around €30 million as Florentino Perez expects to recoup the €31.5 million that he paid for him two years ago.

However, according to the reliableGianluca di Marzio, who believes that Real Madrid would accept a bid of around €20-25 million for the Brazilian, Max Allegri will have to fight off his predecessor, Antonio Conte, in order to successfully sign him.

In case you didn’t know…

Danilo was signed from Porto in the summer of 2015 for an exuberant fee of €31.5 million. However, the full-back couldn’t cement his place as a starter as Dani Carvajal has made the place his own. Indeed, the former Santos starlet could only manage to feature in 24 games in all competitions last term and would certainly like to add more to it.

The heart of the matter

For most of last season, Antonio Conte had to use Victor Moses at right-wing-back and wants reinforcements and Danilo has been on his mind since January. With Danilo’s former team-mate, Alex Sandro, on his way to the London club, it seems as though Conte’s intent is to build a strong squad that is able to compete on all fronts.

Notorious kidnapper Evans sues Nigeria Police, IGP

Notorious kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, otherwise known as Evans, on Wednesday dragged the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, and three others before the Federal High Court in Lagos for alleged illegal detention.
In the suit filed on his behalf by his lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, Evans is praying for the order of court to direct the respondents to immediately charge him to court if there is any case against him in accordance with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Joined as respondents with Mr. Idris in the suit are the Nigeria Police Force, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Lagos State Police Command.
In the alternative, Evans is praying the court to compel the respondents to immediately release him unconditionally in the absence of any offence that will warrant his being charged to court.
According to the rights enforcement suit, Evans is challenging his continued detention by the respondents since he was arrested in June.
According to him, his continued detention without being charged to court or released on bail is an infringement on his fundamental human rights, saying that the respondents ought to have charged him to court in accordance with the provisions of Sections 35 and 36 of the Constitution.
Furthermore, the suit argued that the alleged offences he committed are intertwined with the constitutional safeguards as provided under Sections 35 and 36 of the Constitution.
To support Evans’ case, his father, Stephen Onwuamadike, also deposed to an affidavit in support of the suit.
In his 27-paragraph affidavit, Mr. Onwuamadike averred that his son (applicant) has been subjected to media trial without any court order by the respondents.
He argued that the media trial has continued to generate reactions in both print and electronic media without his son being given the option of fair hearing and trial before a court of law.
According to him, since Evans was arrested, his family members have been denied access to him while journalists and other media personnel have however been granted unchecked access.
PREMIUM TIMES findings however revealed that the matter has not been assigned to any judge and no date has been fixed for the hearing.
But in his reaction, Jimoh Moshood, spokesperson to the Nigeria Police, said that the force had obtained a court order from a Federal High Court, Abuja, to detain the suspect for three months, for proper investigation.
The investigation, the police said, will take operatives to Ghana, South Africa and other places before he (Evans) would be arraigned.
Evans and six of his co-conspirators were arrested and paraded at the Lagos State Police Command earlier in June.
According to Mr. Moshood, the suspects were arrested after officers stormed the kidnappers’ den and engaged in a gun battle which lasted several hours.
Evans was first declared wanted in August 2013 for the attempted kidnap of Vincent Obianudo, the owner of a Lagos-based transportation company. Mr. Obianudo survived the attempt, as police officers foiled the scheme, killing three of his gang members in the process.
According to the police, the gang primarily kidnapped victims in Lagos State but have also kidnapped prominent Nigerians from Northern states.

AS Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko has undergone a medical at Premier League champions Chelsea.

AS Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko has undergone a medical at Premier League champions Chelsea ahead of a £35million move, according to the Sun.
The newspaper claims that the 22-year-old met up with the Chelsea medical team in London earlier this week to undergo physical checks with only a few details still to iron out with Monaco over the deal.
The report claims that the Blues are planning to announce the signing of the player when the summer transfer window officially opens on Saturday.
It is understood that Premier League rivals Manchester United were also interested in landing the Frenchman this summer but Bakayoko reportedly preferred to work with Chelsea boss Antonio Conte over Jose Mourinho.
The Sun reports that the midfielder’s arrival to Stamford Bridge could signify the end of Nemanja Matic’s spell in London as he looks set to complete a deal with United.
The Frenchman enjoyed a fantastic campaign with Monaco last season as he helped them clinch the league title for the first time in seventeen years.
The midfielder produced some outstanding performances, contributing with three goals and one assist in 51 matches in all competitions.
Bakayoko is likely to form a formidable partnership with Chelsea enforcer N’Golo Kante next season.

Chelsea to complete £61m first signing as 22-year-old heads for exit – report

Chelsea are set to complete the £61m signing of Alex Sandro from Juventus, with Nathan Ake set to join Bournemouth for £20m, according to reports in the British media.
The Daily Mail is reporting that the west London side are set to wrap up a club-record deal to land full-back Sandro from Juventus but will be able to recoup a large portion of the fee by selling Ake to Bournemouth.
The same story claims that Ake is determined to enjoy regular first-team football next season after being recalled early from his loan spell at Bournemouth back in January.
Ake found his first-team opportunities at Stamford Bridge limited following his return after impressing during the first half of the season with Eddie Howe’s men.
The article claims that Chelsea are “reluctant” to sell the 22-year-old Ake but if they do end up doing a deal, the will demand to have a buy-back option inserted in his contract.

Biafra: Kanu rejects calls for restructuring, insists on referendum.

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has rejected calls being made by prominent Nigerians for the restructuring of the country as only antidote in solving the present agitations in the nation.
Kanu made the remark in his response after being adopted as the Biafra Supreme leader by various pro-Biafra groups under the aegis of Biafra Peoples National Council.
The groups which led thousands of their members to the country home of Kanu where the declaration was made include: the Uchenna Madu- led Movement for the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB); Biafra Revolutionary Organisation; World Union of Biafra Scientists.
Others were Biafra Liberation Crusaders; Salvation of Biafran People; Joint Revolutionary Council of Biafra; and Eastern Peoples Congress (EPC).
Kanu who vowed to continue with the agitation for Biafra insisted that restructuring would not solve the many woes bedeviling Nigeria, insisting that “it is either Biafra or nothing.”
Kanu asked the Federal Government to urgently conduct referendum for Biafra exit from Nigeria or there would be no election on Biafra soil henceforth.
He said that he did not need to write any special letter to the Federal Government on referendum, “because they should see the handwriting on the wall.”
Addressing newsmen later in the evening, Madu said the decision to adopt Kanu as Biafran Supreme Leader was reached after a holistic review of his sacrifices during an emergency meeting of BPNC.
“All pro-Biafra groups hereby adopt and declare our brother Nnamdi Kanu as the new Leader of Biafra nation under whose leadership through the grace of God the people of Biafra shall have rest”, he said.
He said that BPNC as an umbrella body of all pro-Biafra groups resolved “to enter into a phase of mutual relationship with IPOB under the leadership of Kanu for the future running of the internal and external affairs of Biafra.”
Madu further said that Kanu’s leadership “shall bring unity, peace, progress, and brotherly love among the esteemed people of Biafra through the instrumentality of mutual and intimate understanding among the pro-Biafra groups.”
He however, said that the individual pro-groups would still exist but loyal to the leadership of Kanu as the arrowhead of the Biafran struggle.
Madu said that the import of the declaration was to prove to the skeptics that “Biafra is one, and united under Nnamdi Kanu as one people”, adding that hence forth “Biafra will be speaking with one voice.”
He said the groups strongly believe that Biafra would soon be actualised under Kanu without war.
His words: “Nnamdi is our Joshua who will lead Biafra into the promised land. Under his leadership Biafran people will enter into their rest.
“No more changing of baton. We will not tolerate any opposition to his leadership. He is our supreme leader. We are fighting for one cause.
“We shall sacrifice anything to defend him. Our honour and respect shall go to him. Anyone fighting against him is fighting against us.”

Igbos storm Kanu’s compound demanding for Biafra.

Thousands of pro-Biafra agitators, on Wednesday, stormed the compound of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Director of London based radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, in Isiama Afaraukwu Ibeku, Umuahia in Abia state, demanding for the Republic of Biafra.
In several video clips which has gone viral on social media, thousands of people with Biafran flag were heard chanting “All we are saying, Give us Biafra”.
Nnamdi Kanu’s compound is just a stone throw away from the Abia State Government House in Umuahia.
The development, which is not the first mass gathering of pro-Biafra agitators in Kanu’s compound, is coming two months after the IPOB leader regained freedom after spending 18 months in detention.
Recall that Justice Binta Nyako of a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja had granted bail to Kanu on health grounds and ordered him not to grant press interviews and avoid being seen in a crowd of more than 10 people.
The IPOB leader was freed after meeting the bail conditions but he has not only addressed hundreds of his supporters but has also granted media interviews where he declared that the coming of the Republic of Biafra was imminent.

He also assures the Nigerian people of the determination and resolve of the Buhari administration to ensure their well-being and security at all times. “The federal government will continue to actively engage with Nigerians of all shades and opinions in its bid to move the country forward on a path of socio-economic development and ultimate greatness.” NAIJ.com earlier reported that Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has released the scorecard of Acting President Professor Yemi Osinbajo as President Muhammadu Buhari’s medical vacation enters day 51.

Kwankwaso: Igbos Can’t Leave The North Because Of Their Numerous Investments

A former governor of Kano State Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ( APC, Kano Central) yesterday said Igbo in the North cannot leave the region because of their numerous investments.
He also said the size of the land Igbo presently occupy in the North is more than the entire South East geopolitical zone.
Speaking in an interview with
Daily Trust on the agitation for secession by Igbo groups and the quit notice by some northern groups, Kwankwaso said none of the millions of Igbo in the North would support the breakup of Nigeria.
Kwankwaso, who chairs the Senate Committee on National Planning and Economic Affairs, said the agitation at both sides does not portray the country in good light among the comity of nations.
He said there was urgent need for all stakeholders in the country to put hands on deck to ensure peace.“The unity and development of the country.
Kwankwaso said during his tenure as governor, a layout known as ‘New Enugu’ was carved out in Kano for the Igbo, saying the Igbo are more comfortable there than their states of origin.
On the quit notice by some northern youths, he said the general consensus in the North was that the country is better as one family.
Kaduna State Governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai on Tuesday said he would ensure the arrest of the Arewa youths who issued a quit notice to Igbo in the North no matter how long it takes.
El-Rufai who stated this while receiving leaders of the Igbo Delegate Assembly and Northern Igbo Chiefs who paid him a visit at Government House in Kaduna said the youths would be arrested and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.
He, however, called on the Igbo leaders to prevail on their youths to stop making statements capable of dividing Nigeria.

We are not Biafrans –Ibibios

A socio-cultural group in Akwa Ibom State, Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio, has protested against the reported inclusion of the state in an imaginary Biafran map.
The group accused the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and the Movement for Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, of including Akwa Ibom and other states within the south-south region of Nigeria on the Biafran map without consulting them.
It said it considered the inclusion an act of disrespect and provocation.
“We wish to remind the concerned Igbos that this senseless arrogance and callous disrespect for the Ibibio person, an endemic and pathological trait of their extraction has been at the core of the differences of our two nationalities,” the group said in a statement signed by its President, Monday Etokakpan, and Secretary General, James Edet.
“And so as it was in the first republic, so it is now and so shall it be in times to come. Ibibio has nothing in common with Igbo. To wit, we differ in ancestry, culture, beliefs, character traits, language, food, names, dressing and all.”
The group said if Nigeria were to break up today, Akwa Ibom would be “at home and in league with our kin and kindred in the proposed Atlantic Republic consisting of present States of Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, and Rivers.
“Our Capital City shall be Port Harcourt, our Currency and Language shall both be Lanti.”
The group said that Akwa Ibom, for now, prefers to stay within the Nigeria federation
“If the Igbos will be honestly desirous, sincerely determined and eventually successful in breaking away from Nigeria, we the Ibibio people in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States will be totally indifferent and will only be here to bid them fare-well.
“As a distinct and independent-minded people of over seven million in population we will continue to weigh our options in the Nigerian chase board and make the right moves the way we want it, in the direction we want, at the time we want and will partner with whomever we want to, if we must partner with anyone, to serve our best interest,” the group said.
The group said it was “unfortunate though not surprising” for the northern youth to order the Igbos to leave the north before October 1. It blamed the situation on the country’s refusal to start a process of restructuring the federation.”
The call by the northern group has been condemned by state and federal officials.
“We call on Northern Nigeria opinion leaders, elders, religious and political leaders and indeed the Federal Government to do the needful in reining in this mindless radicalism from their youth,” the group said.
“Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio would like to remind the northern Nigerians that no one, youth or elders, in the country has the monopoly of violence and that the lives and legitimately acquired property of the Ibibio person means the world to us.
“Therefore, no harm must befall them wherever they have chosen to live in Nigeria and indeed anywhere on the surface of the earth. Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio believes and will ensure that the Ibibio people exact pound for pound, flesh for flesh and life for life if necessary,” the group said.

He is going to pay for all the damage that he has done to me. He was the only one who had that leaked picture and I am shocked why he would forward it to some other girl. He normally targets single mothers.” Mavenge also narrated how she met Nyatsungo and had to fly from Cape Town to Johannesburg, to meet him in April while he was visiting South Africa: “That night he didn’t even have money. I had to pay the R800 for the accommodation as he had no money.
He wanted to sleep with me but I flatly refused. He even wanted it without protection and I said No. he looked terrible with clothes in a plastic shopping bag. I want to write a letter to Pastor Rex who is the head of (the church) in Harare so that this guy be stopped with his tricks and lies.” Another of his girlfriends identified as Mutsa, confirmed their relationship, however claiming she broke it off after realising he was a married man.
